Beatnik Rarity - MLP Custom by Nsomniotic Beatnik Rarity - MLP Custom by Nsomniotic
Alright, so I ran into a problem with Rarity - I made her tail too long. So I made her a little silver and gold stand, which unfortunately ended up looking kind of like a skateboard. So the stand isn't attached to Rarity. This is a gift for my friend's mom. She saw Beatnik Rarity and loved her.

Her colors also aren't perfect, but the owner is very pleased with how she looks :) The eyes came out better than expected as well.

Bait: Unicorn Brushable
Paint: Acrylic
Varnish: Matte Finish
Mold: Super Sculpey
Created by Myself :iconnsomniotic: in March 2011.

THank you! It actually broke after I baked it and I was so upset because it was such a difficult hair to make 3D, but the person who commissioned it was fine with me gluing it back together, rebaking it (with a thin layer of clay over the previously broken area) and couldn't even tell where it broke. I was so relieved! Definitely a challenging commission :)

I agree, I would have had a meltdown if that had happened to me!

Nice work! If you can curl the tail so it touches the back legs then you can glue it to the leg for extra stability.

I've actually just using glue (with tremendously better success that the mess that I was doing before - attaching the tails by sheer willpower apparently lol) so this advice is really helpful. For some reason before I thought glue would be less sturdy or something. But the gorilla glue seems to be indestructible (cross my fingers! lol) I've also been experimenting with wire with mixed success. I think a combination of wire and your technique would work the best though. Thank you so much for the advice!

It is deceptive in the picture, when She is standing without the stand it is weirdly long lol. Oh well, I'm just glad it looks good in spite of that! Thank you so much for the compliments!

Those eyes look great! that's a difficult shape to paint. The hair is so flowing you captured the movement nicely~

I do that same thing, if I mess up I make a platform XD

hahaha yeah it was a last minute realization - I was like OMG it's too long! AHHH! And I didn't want to scrap the whole tail (It took me forever lol) so I invented a bizarre wannabe skateboard haha

But seriously, I really appreciate the compliment - especially coming from you! You know I love your work :)

Yeah, I love doing the eyes, but I tend to not be great at the lighting. These were easier than I expected, though. Fluttershy was another one with difficult eyes lol. These pony eyes drive me mad!

XD I hate when that happens. Everything looks perfect and BAM! a mistake *tear*

Fluttershy's eyes are difficult! If you make the top part of her eye wrong, she looks evil or mad! It's hard to get that look right.

Aww, you make me feel important ( >w< ) Thank you.

Well you are! haha

Yeah - plus I mold the hair onto the pony instead of just gluing it on, so I always have to paint under the hair and somehow make it look good - Very stressful! And it is so easy to mess up their expressions! Especially since I can't really change the mouth without heavy editing. That was actually the hardest part of Pinkamena. She still scares me to look at.

The mistakes always kill me - and my friend was like, oh well, can't you just take the tail off and make it shorter? I almost had heart failure hahaha

I mold the hair onto but sometimes you can pop it off. It makes painting way easier but sometimes you can't pop off the hair ( ;__; ) I congratulate your skills. You can still paint the hair and not mess up the pony's body :D

The Pinkamena look *shudder*

One does not simply make the tail shorter! Teach them about ponies!

I know! I needed to inform him of the rules! He knows better now lol.

And thank you!! I try really hard, to the point of nearly throwing things haha

I love yours so much. They're one of the examples I look at. I forget, do you use Super Sculpey or Milliput? And do you have an advice for the tails? The more advanced ones I do, the more I feel like I have to learn. The tails are definitely the hardest. I haven't even really tried a shorter tail yet.

XD Yeah!

You can't throw the ponies! They'll get mad ( ;__; )

Aww, I feel the love again <3 Thank you. I use Super Sculpey. I was going to post a tutorial on how I attach my tails. Rarity's tail is one of the hardest to make correctly. I normally bake the tail separately but her tail is so round and bouncy! For Rarity, I usually put make a hook shape wire to insert into the tail, put the wire into the tail and attach the tail to the butt (so the tail won't completely detach itself from the pony if it breaks off) then bake the pony. I hope that made sense, it's difficult to explain in words :/

Here are some pictures of the wire in the tail. I was planning on using these pictures in the tutorial but I want to take better ones: [link] [link]

Thank you so much for that! I was running the wire through the whole thing and having trouble, but now I know why. I actually did use a wire on both of the taisl I did recently and they didn't stick like they normally did, but the dried correctly and then I was able to glue them on. Each one got progressively better so I'm feeling awesome about this!

It definitely did make sense and seriously - you are amazing! I love the community online - I've found so much help. I've even been asked for advice and been blown away by the love I get on here.

I can't wait to see the finished tutorial :)
